Who Once Inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighboring States is the subtitle. John Gottlieb Ernestus Heckewelder (1743-1823) came to America at the age of eleven and became a Moravian missionary to the Indians on the Susquehanna River; he subsequently aided in their removal to Ohio and Canada. He was an astute observer and, in the course of his work with them, became an expert on their history, manners, customs, and languages.
